TravelMail takes the iconic American coach from London to Southampton
The iconic Greyhound bus line brought a touch of American glamour to London today when it launched its very first routes in the UK.
The wellknown American brand, romanticised in Hollywood films and even a Bob Dylan song, will initially be running from London to Southampton and Portsmouth.
Its aim is to renew Britain love of bus travel by offering an executive service with ample leg room and reclining seats, a free newspaper, WiFi and power sockets for laptops and mobile phones in every bus.
American import: Sarah heads to Lodnon Victoria to board the first Greyhound travelling to Southampton
Anyone looking for the authentic US experience may be disappointed with the lack of chrome trim and slanted windows. But the romantic spirit of Stateside travel is kept alive this side of the Atlantic with each bus named after women from popular American songs including Barbara Ann, Sweet Caroline and Billie Jean.
TravelMail jumped on board for the inaugural journey to Southampton in Peggy Sue.
As I reclined back in my leather seat and stretched out my legs the British Greyhound seemed far removed from its American cousin, known for its jolting journeys and uncomfortable seats.
However, the famous name seems to have inspired the UK traveller and Greyhound UK Managing Director Alex Warner, is said to be with the level of interest nearly 6,000 bookings were taken before the first journey was even made.
One of the reasons for public interest could be the ticket price. Greyhound has been aggressive with its pricing, offering fares from 1 with a 50p booking charge online and a promise of tickets costing no more than 10 at any time.
don use the recession as an excuse not to start a new venture, said Mr Warner.
market research showed that 46 per cent of rail users would take the coach if they were offered a comfortable journey with leg room and 75 per cent of coach passengers would switch companies if they were offered an executive travel experience at a good price.
The journey to Southampton is accurately timetabled to take 1 hour 59 minutes, just 40 minutes slower than the direct train, and at least 15 minutes faster than the National Express coach.
As I sit back and enjoy the comfort, I am surprised to find that I can actually open my laptop and use it comfortably even with the seat in front of me reclined.
I start tapping away and it is easy to forget I am on a coach as we speed down to Southampton. The feeling on board is that of space, no sardinelike conditions here.
In fact the only thing that could make the journey better is a nice, cold drink something that Greyhound fans were offered to celebrate its first journey, but which is still in the pipeline for other trips says Mr Warner.
Apparently, the company thought very carefully about where to start Greyhound UK and opted for Southampton and Portsmouth routes to cater for the large student population, transient sports fans, tourism to the cities and the Isle of Wight and, perhaps more interestingly, the armed forces for who they plan to offer a special discount.
Greyhound idea of executive travel at low prices has certainly worried other bus companies.
National Express has started a price war on its Southampton and Portsmouth routes with tickets costing 99p, a ruse that Mr Warner claims is an insult to the British public.
refuse to drop our price a penny to 99p,ugg pas cher, passengers don fall for that stunt anymore. We offer tickets for 1 including a free newspaper which normally costs more than the journey itself.
